Movement at Master Spring and Wireform: Embracing Our History While Moving Into the Future

In case you haven’t heard, Master Spring has recently moved locations – a move that could certainly be categorized as emotional.

We had been producing springs and wire forms in the River Grove location since 1950. With the passing of Emil and Marge years earlier, leaving the old building meant leaving a little bit of the Burda’s history behind. Many people worked in that space longer than they lived in their homes. It was a place that echoed the voice of Emil teaching his son Jeff. It was a place where families came together to work. A place where joys were shared and hard times were shouldered. Many people walked in as teenagers and now were married supporting kids and grandkids. Would change be easy? Would the move be worth it?

How Are They Made: Wire Forms for Construction Equipment

Have you ever looked at a piece of intricately bent wire and thought to yourself, “Just how did they do that?”

At Master Spring, we realize that most people don’t spend much time thinking about how wire forms for power tools and hand tools are made – But this certainly doesn’t make their design any less complicated, or fascinating. As with most of our designs, wire forms follow a detailed manufacturing process, one that requires special attention to exacting precision and tight tolerances.

But in reality, manufacturing this wire utility hook involved the careful orchestration of a precise multi-step process – a process that included, machining, chamfering, threading, heat treating and packaging.

Wire forms for Fishing Lures and Tackle: 50 Years of Manufacturing Precision Parts

Last month, we wrote a post about how the wire form is an essential, yet often overlooked part of the fishing lure. This got us to thinking: In 50 years of manufacturing custom made wire forms, we have made a lot of different parts that have been used in fishing lures, bait and tackle. The question became, “Just how many different designs have we made?”

And so we went on a sort of scavenger hunt. We searched our offices and our shop with the intention of taking an inventory of all the different types of fishing lure and tackle wire forms we have manufactured.

The History of Fish Lure Manufacturing: Two Stories of Discovery

Learn how a couple of happy accidents helped shape a billion dollar industry

For more than 50 years, Master Spring has proudly been helping fishing tackle and lure manufactures get the wire forms they need to finish their designs. And during that time, we have watched the fishing equipment industry explode. Just look at some of these statistics:

  • The fishing equipment market is expected to exceed $20.3 Billion by 2015.1
  • It’s estimated that the fishing industry is directly responsible for supporting 307,175 jobs in the United States.2

All this growth made us start wondering: “Just how did all this begin? And what events helped lay the framework for fishing and lure manufacturers?”

How Are They Made: Wire Forms in Lure Manufacturing

What is the first thing you notice when you see a fishing lure? You probably notice the intricate design, the detailed coloring, the size, or maybe the hook. These little details all play a major role in ensuring that the lure you are using is the right match for the type of fish you are hoping to attract.

However, here at Master Spring, our focus tends to be a little different. Having served the direct wire form needs of fishing tackle and lure manufacturers for the last 60 years, we tend to notice the parts that often get overlooked.

How Are They Made: Wire Forms in Action

Wire forms are used in many applications in a variety of industries. From sports equipment to medical devices, they can be found in a seemingly infinite number of shapes, and they have an equally large array of uses.

But have you ever stopped to think about how a wire form is made?

In order to receive their shape, wire forms, which must be manufactured to exacting specifications, often are bent in a number of different extreme angles. The video below does a great job of illustrating just exactly how a wire form is made.

At Master Spring and Wire Form, we have the ability to design and produce a wide variety of compression springs, extension springs, torsion springs and wire forms. Contact us to learn more about the many types of springs and wire forms we’ve manufactured for our clients.
